Short answer
At pre-seed, a good freelancer or a design subscription covers most needs for a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. At seed, when the deck, site and brand have to tell one story, a studio or agency that works on positioning as well as design is usually worth it, at $5,000 to $50,000 a project or a monthly fee. A full-time designer costs far more, with a median of $182,000 in total pay at US Series B startups, and makes most sense once there is steady product design work every week. Formfactor, the studio behind this guide, works month to month at $4,999 or $8,499.
| Option | Typical price | How you pay | What you get | Best for | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Freelance designer | $15 to $30 an hour is the Upwork median; senior specialists charge much more | By the hour or the project | One person's skills | A defined task with a clear brief | Your time to find, brief and manage them; one person's availability |
| Design subscription | From about $449 a month; $899 is the median entry plan | Monthly; pause or cancel | A queue of design requests, usually one at a time | Steady small tasks: ads, social, slides, page updates | Executes your brief; the positioning and story are still on you |
| Agency | $5,000 to $50,000+ for a website; $25,000 to $50,000 for a startup brand | Fixed project, often with a deposit | A team, strategy and a set deliverable | A larger launch with a fixed scope | Higher cost; changes after sign-off cost extra |
| Formfactor, monthly studio | $4,999 (Pro) or $8,499 (Ultra) a month | Month to month | Positioning, brand, website, decks and product design, led by the founder | Seed teams that need several pieces to tell one story | A monthly cost even for one small task; a small team, so few spots |
| Full-time designer | $182,000 median total pay (product designer, US Series B startups) | Salary and equity | Someone in every meeting | Steady product work after product-market fit | Months to hire; one person rarely covers brand, web, decks and product equally |
What changes the answer
- Stage and runway. Before a raise, every month of spend matters; after it, speed matters more.
- How many pieces are due at once. One deck is a task. A deck, a site and a brand due together is a project.
- Whether the story is settled. If you can say what you do in one sentence, a freelancer can design it. If not, you need help working it out.
- Who will manage the work. Freelancers and subscriptions need a clear brief from you each time.
- A date that won't move. A raise, a launch or a trade show favours a team that can run pieces in parallel.
What it looked like in practice
BetterCampus: weekly sprints alongside the team's developer, two or three product flows a week, rolled out for back-to-school 2025.
(The BetterCampus study co-pilot, one of the flows from those sprints.)
STAXX: with a trade show on the calendar, the brand kit went out in under two weeks so merch, ads and decks could match before the site did.
(STAXX brand direction boards.)
CRHQ: a full brand system in a five-day sprint, handed over with a brand book for people and a spec for its AI agents.
(The CRHQ brand board from the sprint.)
"Each part of the process is very well documented, and each piece of design work comes with great explanation and logic behind the design decisions he makes."
Questions founders ask
- Is a design subscription worth it for a startup?
- For steady small tasks, yes. For a new brand, a fundraising deck or a site that has to explain something new, most subscriptions carry out your brief rather than shape it, so the thinking still falls on you.
- Should we hire a designer before product-market fit?
- Usually not full-time. Outside help covers the launch pieces; a hire makes sense when there is product design work every week.
- How do we check a freelancer or studio?
- Look at work for companies like yours, read reviews from named clients (Clutch publishes verified ones), and ask who will actually do the work.
Working with Formfactor
- How is Formfactor different from a design subscription?
- We work on positioning and story as well as design, in 2 or 4 sessions a week, and you work with the founder directly.
- Can we start with one month?
- Yes. It's month to month: pause or stop any month.
- Who does the work?
- John, the founder, leads every project, with a small bench of specialists when the work needs them.
